How to get to Simeulue Island?
There are two ways to get to Simeulue Island;
- by airplane
- by ferry.
By far the fastest way is to take a plane from Kuala Namu International Airport (KNO) Medan, to Lasikin Sinabang Airport (SMG) Simeulue. Wings Air and Susi Air are flying a couple of times a week to and from Simeulue.
The other option is to take a ferry from Singkil Aceh (west Sumatra) to the harbor of Sinabang Simeulue. To get to the harbor of Singkil Aceh it is best to take a local bus or hire a private driver.
Flights are between IDR 2 million to IDR 4 million for a two way trip. The surfboards are charged per piece by Wings Air for IDR 500.000 per surfboard. The ferry is the cheaper option which will cost around IDR 200.000 for the best room with air conditioning and IDR 90.000 for the VIP room without air conditioning, these prices are for a one way trip. The boardbag will cost around IDR 100.000. The drive from Medan to Singkil is around IDR 500.000.
Flight time 1 hour, the ferry takes 12 hours plus 10 hours by car from Medan to Singkil.
Don’t forget your supplies
Take enough cash from an ATM at the Airport or big city to make sure you have enough to cover the expenses during your travel. The ATM on Simeulue is often out of order and it is hard for foreigners to withdraw money with bank cards other than Indonesian bank cards.
